Master of Music in Piano Performance from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University
Bachelor of Music Performance in Piano from BIOLA University Ms. Cordelia Lam Kirkwood is a passionate and well-rounded musician. She is a solo performer, chamber musician, accompanist, and an experienced teacher. She truly enjoys teaching, and has taught students of all ages and ability levels. Cordelia’s goal in teaching is to give her students the necessary skills and knowledge to become their own teachers at the piano. She strives to develop her students’ techniques in an enjoyable, encouraging, yet effective manner; and she emphasizes the skills of concentration, active listening, and self-observation. Cordelia received her Master of Music in piano performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music at the Johns Hopkins University, and Bachelor of Music Performance in piano at Biola University. Cordelia is a skilled and sensitive performer, and has won many awards and competitions both in the U.S. and Hong Kong, including Distinction Recognition from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, First Prize and Best Performance Award from the Los Angeles Liszt Competition, First Prize from the Chopin Open Solo of the Southern California Young Musician Festival, Emerging Artist Solo and Chamber Competition, Nielson Award, Outstanding Musician Award and Piano Faculty Award from Biola University. She was a finalist at the Redlands Bowl Young Artist Competition. Cordelia appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Mozart Festival Orchestra and the Biola Symphony Orchestra. She has performed in many master classes with the renowned Menahem Pressler, as well as Bela Siki, Irena Morozova, Mordecai Shehori, and Nelita True. Cordelia’s major teachers include Eleanor Wong, Jennie K. Wong and Benjamin Pasternack. She participated at the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York. Cordelia has guest adjudicated at the San Diego Music Spring Festival held by the Music Teachers’ Association of California. She was on the piano faculty at the Garrison Forest School and maintained a large private piano studio in Baltimore, Maryland. Presently, Cordelia teaches in her home studio in Katy, Texas, and resides with her tenor husband (David) and their three lovely daughters (Linnea, Eliana, Adeleine). She has served as President at the Katy Music Teachers Association (KMTA), and is a member of Independent Music Teachers Association (IMTA), Katy Music Teachers Association (KMTA), Texas Music Teachers Association (TMTA), and Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). In 2023, Katy Music Teachers Association received the honorable award of TMTA Best of State while Cordelia served in office as KMTA President. Cordelia's students received Distinction and Merit Awards from ABRSM Exams and Theory Exams, Superior+, Superior, Honors ratings from music festivals of the local chapter (Katy MTA) of MTNA, gold and silver medals from the TMTA Whitlock Theory Tests and World of Music Test, and have been ranked top ten for Texas All State High School auditions. Her students have been winners of Houston and international competitions, and have served as members of the National Junior Honor Society and the National Honor Society. Dr. David Kirkwood, Cordelia's tenor husband, serves as the Chair of Music Department and Coordinator of Vocal Area Studies at Houston Christian University in Houston, Texas, where he teaches. David also serves as Treasurer for the Greater Houston Chapter of National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). David & Cordelia continue to collaborate together in recitals and everyday setting with their three precious daughters. |
